FIRE DEPARTMENT EQUIPMENT DEFINITIONS

Engines primarily carry items and equipment related to water supply and water discharge for fire extinguishment such as hose, nozzles and foam. They also carry three ladders from 10 to 24 feet in length and some tools. All Engines are Basic Life Support (BLS) and Advanced Life Support (ALS) capable.

They are equipped with a large extension ladder, 105 feet long, that rotates on top of the vehicle and is used for rescuing victims from tall buildings and spraying enormous amounts of water from a height. During a fire Trucks are tasked with ventilating smoke and poisonous gases from a structure by cutting holes in the roof, opening windows and utilizing powered fans. Trucks are also in charge of salvaging property from fire and water damage as well as cleaning the structure out after a fire during a process called "overhaul". Trucks also respond to Rescues of victims in trapped water and high and low angles. The Truck carries the hydraulic tools commonly referred to as "the Jaws of Life" to extricate victims involved in incidents such as motor vehicle collisions. All Trucks are Basic Life Support (BLS) and Advanced Life Support (ALS) capable.
