One of the chief social events was the annual firemen’s ball. At the occurrence of this great event, the leading citizens were greatly in evidence. Governors, State and County and City officials, and United States Senators and Congressmen, were the frequent guests. For these functions no expense was spared, and the finest banquets was part of the program. The costumes of the ladies could not be excelled by anything of modern times. The red shirts, bright belts and helmets of the fire laddies were badges of honor and distinction, recognized by the entire community.
